Electronic Logging Device Bill Adopted by Congress
June 29, 2012Today is a big day for the transportation industry. Why? The electronic logging device bill has been adopted by the U.S. Congress, requiring the use of electronic logging devices to track hours of service for all carriers that are required to file a record of duty status (RODS). This decision affects many of us in Xata Nation, whether you’re a fleet owner, a fleet manager or a driver, and whether you’re an independent, a small fleet or a large fleet. The new legislation means that anyone keeping paper log books today for RODS are required to utilize a Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) certified electronic logging device. The FMCSA will be required to create a regulation within one year.

Passing this bill is great news for the U.S. economy and will bring much needed job creation. This new legislation will also impact carriers of all sizes and affect everyone from owners to dispatchers to drivers.
This is the largest piece of legislation in our industry in recent history, and the changes that will take place in the coming months and years are significant. You know the old saying, “Change is hard”? We hear you. That’s why we’ve created a website – www.EOBR.com – devoted to the newly adopted bill and to helping you adjust to this new reality.
