Getting a Jump on Rising Fuel Costs
April 3, 2011I’m not a truck driver, fleet manager, or trucking company executive. No, I’m just one of the many thousands out there traveling our nation’s highways, pumping my fist up and down, hoping a trucker might offer the thrill of a blast from their big rig’s horn. But even as a non-professional driver, I’m concerned about rising fuel costs and its impact on my income.
I’m constantly searching for ways to shave pennies that mean big savings over time. So I was thrilled when I came across GasBuddy – a free smartphone app that allows drivers of all kinds a way to not only locate nearby gas stations using gps technology, but – thanks to a growing social network – identify which of those gas stations offers the best price per gallon.
How does it work?
Simple.
A community of drivers armed with their smartphones use GasBuddy’s simple reporting feature to post gas prices to the greater online network. To encourage participation, GasBuddy users earn points toward prize give-away entries every time they submit data.
Drivers can:
- Use tabs to view prices for various fuel grades, including diesel fuel
- Sort, based upon price per gallon or distance from the station
- View gas stations in a list or plotted on a map
Selecting any particular station provides additional information and options, including:
- A detailed list of gas station features (ATM, convenience store, service station, etc.)
- A map directions function
- A simple price reporting feature
This app is currently available for Windows7, iPhone, and Android smartphones. And, this month, it’s expected to be available to BlackBerry users, as well.
How do you stay on top of rising fuel costs?
